IN THE SHADOW IT WAITS is a horror film performed live and edited in real-time with actors performing from their own homes in different states across Australia. The audience is witnessing a film being made as they’re watching it.
“If I hadn’t known this was live I would never have believed it. In fact I doubted it several times throughout the film, as it was all so seamless.”- Move Waffler
“as a ‘live in lockdown’ production, it’s amongst the best”- London Theatre1 Review
“If artistic achievement is found in that magic space where preparation meets improvisation, then In the Shadows It Waits is an artistic achievement indeed. It’s no mere “Good effort, mate” — this stuff is genuinely frightening.”- ReelGood
The film tells the story of four twenty-something co-workers bored with their day jobs and sick of being locked up in isolation, who play a silly online game and unwittingly prove the truth of an urban legend. And while these co-workers might not be able to get out, it doesn’t mean that something can’t get in. Would you dare to play?
Orson Wells once declared that “The enemy of art is the absence of limitations”. The COVID 19 lockdown has provided limitations in spades and this was something that Creator and Director Michael Beets was interested to explore.
Michael Beets Quote: “I’ve always tried to push the boundaries of technology and performance and this was a chance to combine film and live performance in a way that hasn’t been done before. Performing in front of a live audience is such a thrill. Now we are bringing all the excitement and energy of live performance with the techniques and skills of filmmaking.”
Beets’ past work the award-winning Virtual Reality Experience THE UNKNOWN PATIENT is proof that using limitations, in that instance, the limitations of VR, can inspire creative choices. The VR Experience tells the story of one of the most shell-shocked soldiers of WWI and premiered at Venice International Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival and took out Best International VR Experience at Adelaide Film Festival in 2019.
Unconventionally, neither the actors nor the director has met each other in real life. And with each performance being a new film, it’s an exciting challenge for actors Vessela Karadjova, Eddie Orton, Robert Pham, Naomi Plucke, Nalani Wakita and SC Wilson who are performing in different states.
100% of all tickets will go directly to everyone in the production – the actors, filmmaker and tech crew. The audience is invited to meet the artists they’re directly supporting through a virtual Q&A and drink after each performance.
